The World's Breadbasket

Agriculture remains the dominant activity in the drylands, though the scope varies from capital-intensive agribusiness to nomadic pastoralism. Three quarters of the world's food supply consists of five crops; potato, manioc, wheat, maize and rice, and all of these crops are grown in the drylands. Sustainable socio-economic development and sound environmental management will maintain the high productivity of the drylands as the world's population continues to grow.
