Biologically Dynamic Forest Fragment Study Area
The narrow red swath (center left) isolates a 100 hectare forest fragment from
the continuous primary forest. The swath was cut and burned in July 1991. At the
time of the May 1993 ground photo the swath had not remained clear, possibly because
the terrain was too steep for cattle to graze. The two somewhat parallel linear
features in this image are the Manaus - Boa Vista road (BR-174) and the power
line right-of-way running from the Balbina hydro project to Manaus.
