Mars Landing Site Selection
This project relates to service as the co-chair of the Mars Landing Site
Steering Committee. Work involves ensuring that there is: A) a scientifically
rigorous process for introducing and assessing relevant potential landing
sites; B) that there is a formal process in place to ensure that the community
has insight into and participation in the landing site selection process;
and C) establishment of a close working relationship between the project
at JPL and the science community to certify that site selection is based
on maximizing mission science return within limits imposed by safety and
engineering constraints. Finally, additional effort will focus on continued
identification and evaluation of potential landing sites on Mars using Viking,
Mariner, Mars Global Surveyor (MGS), and Earth-based data sets. Work is
funded by NASA's MDAP Program. Project Abstract
