Geologic Mapping of the Lowland Plains on Venus

(a) Synthetic Aperture Radar image mosaic of the Kawelu Planitia (V16) quadrangle (25° to 50° N. lat., 240° to 270° long.), Venus (courtesy U. S. Geological Survey, Flagstaff, AZ). (b) Geologic map of the V16 quadrangle, Venus (courtesy J. Zimbelman, CEPS).   CEPS Staff:
Dr. Jim Zimbelman

The Magellan spacecraft provided excellent radar images of nearly all of Venus. The imaging data are the basis for interpreting the geologic history of the Kawelu Planitia and Bellona Fossae regions in the northern lowland plains, as part of a NASA-sponsored effort to map the entire planet.
