

Science Demonstrations
Science demonstrations are offered throughout the
day to the general public on a first-come, first-served basis. Public demonstration times are posted each day at the entrance
of How Things Fly (gallery 109).
Science demonstrations may also be reserved in advance for school groups. Please note that adequate space cannot be guaranteed for school groups during public demonstrations, so reservations are recommended.

Science Demonstrations at the National Mall Building

Forces Of Flight
Grades: 4–12
Availability: Monday through Friday at 11:00 a.m. (limit 60 students)
Description: Students learn about the basic scientific principles of air- and
spaceflight by seeing what makes a balloon buoyant, testing their
own strength against the air pressure in the gallery, exploring
Bernoulli’s principle, and much more. A teaching poster for
the interactive exhibition How Things Fly will be sent free of charge
with your confirmation.
Paper Airplane Contest
Grades: 4-12
Availability: Monday through Friday at 10:30 a.m. (limit 30 students)
Description: Explore the concept of “stability” with this fun, hands-on
activity. Students use paper clips to balance their airplanes and
compete against their classmates for a prize. No experience necessary!
All materials provided.
Star Station One
Grades: 4-12
Availability: Monday through Friday at 10:30 a.m. (limit 60 students)
Description: Chances are that you have heard about the International Space Station.
But what is it? Where is it? Who’s building it, and why? Answers
to these and other questions are provided in our newest demonstration.
