Angela Manno employed batik, the ancient technique of textile design, to create a series of twelve images that explore the experience of seeing the Earth from space for the first time. In reviewing photographs taken on Apollo missions and writings by those who visited the Moon, Manno was struck by the sense of membership in a larger community that the astronauts gained from their journeys. Although she quotes Apollo 10 and 17 astronaut Eugene Cernan in this work, it clearly recalls the Apollo 8 “Earthrise” photograph.
