Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center Phase Two

Archives, Collections Processing Unit and
Emil Buehler Conservation Laboratory

Archives

Adjacent to the new Restoration Hangar, the Archives will cover 30,000 square feet of floor space and accommodate more than 10,000 cubic feet of manuscripts and technical files relating to the history of aviation and space flight. Visitors to the Archives will also have access to one of the most complete collections of historic aviation and space visual imagery -- over 1.75 million photographs and over 20,000 film and video titles. Trained archivists familiar with the collections and their subject matter will be on hand to assist researchers.

    Collections Processing Unit

Located on the first level below the Archives will be the collections processing unit, which will serve as the point of entrance for archival collections and museum objects.  Collections will be received here at a dedicated loading dock, inspected by the collections team, catalogued by curators, photographed, and prepared for exhibition or storage.  Curators, registrars, and collections managers will perform their behind-the-scenes work in this specially designed secure environment.

    The Emil Buehler Conservation Laboratory

Conservation is a vital part of caring for the national collection. The Emil Buehler Conservation Laboratory will provide much-needed space for special treatment of artifacts. Here, conservators will clean and stabilize small artifacts or components of larger objects.
