  Aichi Seiran - Wings

Restoration of the Aichi Seiran wings was completed in March, 1999. The ailerons were completed soon after. Below are photos taken during the restoration of one Seiran wing.

One Aichi Seiran wing is completely restored. The items in the foreground are parts of the various drive mechanisms (flaps, wing fold, and locking pins) located in the wing.

Jan 98 Aichi wing

Jan, 1998
Here is the same wing as shown above, 11 months earlier. Karl Heinzel is pictured here with his scale model of the Aichi Seiran in front of the wing he is currently working on. The extensive corrosion, especially to the duralumin spar, necessitated nearly complete disassembly of the structure.

Jan, 1998
The wings on the Aichi Seiran folded by turning 90 degrees forward around the spar and then folding backwards along the fuselage. One wing's drive gear mechanism was missing. The missing gear had to be manufactured (copied without any sketches or info) by Master Machinist George. Can you tell which is the original?
