The Nieuport 28C-1 160 h.p. Gnôme rotary engine. This engine was more powerful than typical Nieuport sesquiplane engines and were installed as an attempt to compete with the superior performance of the Spad VII and Spad XIII of the time. To accomodate the more powerful, heavier engine, Nieuport decided to increase the surface area of the lower wing to compensate for the greater weight of the new powerplant, hence eliminating the typical Nieuport sesquiplane, V-strut configuration.
