The Smithsonian's Silver Hill Museum in Suitland, Maryland, begins public tours of the preservation, restoration and storage facility.
A Museum-sponsored symposium devoted to the life and accomplishments of Charles A. Lindbergh marks the 50th anniversary of Lindbergh's historic flight across the Atlantic. A new exhibit is installed near the Spirit of St. Louis, featuring film from Lindbergh's flight and items of his flight wardrobe. The Charles A. Lindbergh Chair of Aerospace History is established to commemorate the anniversary.
Carlos Andres Perez, president of Venezuela, presents Alejandro Otero's Delta Solar sculpture to the Museum as a gift from the people of Venezuela to the United States in commemoration of the Bicentennial year.
Reaching its first anniversary on July 1, the Museum has become the biggest tourist attraction in Washington, having 9.5 million visitors during its first year of operation. Kenric Callwood from the island of St. Thomas is welcomed as the 10-millionth visitor.
The Museum hosts its first annual Smithsonian Frisbee Festival on the National Mall.
Exploring the Planets, an exhibition devoted to
human & robotic exploration of the planets
in the solar system, opens to the public.
