In recognition of his 67 years of service to the Smithsonian Institution, Dr. Paul E. Garber, historian emeritus, is declared the Museum's honorary director for the day (August 14).
 
Dr. Martin O. Harwit, Cornell University astrophysicist, is appointed director the Museum (August 17)
 
Barry Goldwater, former senator from Arizona, is presented with the Smithsonian Institution's Samuel P. Langley Medal for his lifelong contribution to aviation and his seminal role in the building of the National Air and Space Museum (November 3)..
 
Voyager, the first aircraft to fly around the world without landing or refueling, is transported to the Museum and suspended from the ceiling in the South Lobby (November 20).
