Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center Construction

Raising the Final Truss for the Aviation Hangar

On May 30, 2002, the 21st and final truss for the Aviation Hangar was lifted into place. These images show some of the work involved in this major milestone in the construction of the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center.

ADF ironworkers "catch" and then bolt into place the truss at three points. The east side was "captured" first at 10:10; the west side followed at 10:15.

The steel was "topped out" with the addition of the traditional fir tree, symbolic of completion of this important structural steel milestone.

The Aviation Hangar now stretches to its full length of 984 feet! Framework for the large hangar doors on the north and south ends stand ready for the installation of overhead braced-arm canopy doors this summer..
