County Support
General John R. Dailey, Director, National Air
and Space Museum, updated the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors
on September 15, 2003. General Dailey reviewed the plans for opening
events and thanked the County for its continuted support. An economic
impact study estimates $1.4 million a year in new direct tax revenue
and $139K to $1.25 million a year in new indirect tax revenue for
Fairfax County.
In addition, the Center will be an attractive field trip destination
for Virginia's school children. It will house a learning laboratory
and classrooms, and teachers will have hands-on opportunities for
continuing their own training. Exposure to the real artifacts of air
and space will make history and science truly come alive.
Recognizing the benefits to Fairfax County, the County Board of Supervisors
included $300,000 in the Countys FY 2000, 2001, and 2002 budgets
(total $900,000) to support building the Udvar-Hazy Center, and $240,000
was approved for FY 2003, 2004, and 2005 (total $1,620,000).
Loudoun County has also provided grants that support tourism in the greater region.
The County has provided a total of $285,000 over three years from the County's Transit
Occupancy Tax fund. The Museum is working closely with the Loudoun Convention and Visitors Association.
Bus Service from the Mall and Dulles Airport to the Udvar-Hazy Center
As part of the Commonwealth's support for the Steven
F. Udvar-Hazy Center, the Virginia Department of Rail and Public
Transportation has identified funding for an express bus service
to serve visitors wishing to transit between the National Air and
Space Museum on the Mall and the new facility
in the Dulles corridor. Onboard, riders may watch videos about the
Smithsonian attractions they will see upon arrival. See the visitor
information pages for details. Many regional
hotels will also extend their shuttle service to the Udvar-Hazy
Center.
