Rocket fuel developer; chief chemist at the Naval Air Rocket Test Station and its successor, the Liquid Propulsion Laboratory at the Picatinny Arsenal, 1949-70. Under his direction, a new family of storable high-energy liquid propellants later used in the Apollo program was developed by Navy civilian scientists in 1959. Author of Ignition, an Informal History of Liquid Rocket Propellants, 1972, and numerous science fiction stories. Papers include correspondence, drafts of scientific and science fiction publications, notes, an unpublished typescript memoir, photographs, diaries (1923-84), and news clippings.

Papers, ca. 1931-1972; 60 cubic feet.
Professor of astronomy and engineering at the University of California at Los Angeles (1937-1974) and recognized as the founder of the field of astrodynamics, which applied the disciplines of celestial mechanics and mathematics to the problems of space trajectory research. In 1945 Herrick founded the Institute of Navigation; in 1946 he instituted a course in Rocket Navigation at UCLA, the world's first university-level course on astronautics. Papers include correspondence (Robert H. Goddard was a correspondent), notes, drafts of publications, and files relating to courses and students. His consulting files for private industry and for NASA's Project Mercury and the film The Day the Earth Stood Still are included.

Papers; 1941-1982; 25 cubic feet.
Aeronautical engineer and NASA administrator; joined the Langley Aeronautical Laboratory in 1945; named an original member of NASA's Space Task Group in 1958; flight director for all the Mercury and many of the Gemini missions; directed the design of Mission Control at the Manned Spacecraft Center in Houston; named Deputy Director of the MSC in 1970 and director in 1972-1982. Papers include correspondence, notes, and limited- circulation NACA and NASA documents. These range from his notes and calculations on the P-47 Thunderbolt aircraft in the 1940s and annotated copies of the "Mission Rules" for space missions in the 1950s and 1960s, to his extensive notes from meetings and conversations in the 1970s and 1980s. Astronomer. His career has included university teaching and government service with the Naval Ordnance Laboratory, Operations Research Office and NASA. Was recruited by the Manned Spacecraft Center in 1968 to teach astronomy to the astronauts and to work on the S201 far ultra-violet camera used in the Apollo and Skylab programs. Papers include typescript copies of speeches and reports; the balance of his papers have been willed to the Virginia Tech Library.

Manufacturer, inventor; father of "numerical control," or the application of computer technology to manufacturing processes. Parsons conceived a machine tool for automatically producing aircraft structural shapes from punch card/tape input (1946). He originated an operation which became the world's largest designer, producer and overhauler of helicopter rotor blades; built the first all- composite airplane for the Office of Naval Research. President and owner of the Parsons Corp and the John T. Parsons Co, both of Traverse City, Michigan. Papers include correspondence, memoranda, financial records, engineering drawings and specifications, reading files, and other materials.

Aeronautical engineer, active in aerodynamics research related to the development of high-speed aircraft and variable-sweep wing technology. Joined the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics in 1944 and retired from NASA Langley Research Center in 1981. He is the holder or co-holder of three US patents on variable-sweep wing technology; recognized as the co-inventor of the variable-sweep aircraft configuration concept that led to the USAF F-111 and B-1 aircraft. Papers include reprints of Polhamus' articles and reports, correspondence, notebooks, and photographs relating to his patents on variable wing sweeps, F-111 aircraft and cryogenic wind tunnel development, and vortex lift aerodynamics; Congressional testimony on the TFX contract investigation; and materials relating to his Wright Brothers lectureship in 1983.

Physicist and university instructor of physics and mechanical engineering. Randolph was an officer in the US Army Ordnance Department (1931-43). Editor of the Journal of the American Rocket Society (1947-48). Papers include 36 manuscript notebooks containing notes on rocket designs, the use of rockets in warfare, and atomic bombs. Also included is the manuscript of Randolph's unpublished science fiction novel of 1927-1928, "The Neighbor World."

Papers; 1950-1967; 2 cubic feet.
Aeronautical engineer and NASA administrator. Soule joined the Langley Aeronautical Laboratory in 1927; was head of the Spin Tunnel Section, Chief of the Stability Research Division, and Assistant Director. Was instrumental in establishing the NASA High Speed Flight Research Center at Edwards AFB and the Mercury Ground Tracking and Data Acquisition System. Papers include notes, memoranda, calculations, and drawings on the High-Speed Flight Research Station (1950-54); Research Airplane Program (1953-57); X-15 program (1958- 62); Dyna Soar program (1957-62); Projects Mercury and Gemini (1961-62); and history of the high-speed aircraft program (1963-67).
