Note: At the end of 1987 this office had collected about 6,000 oral
histories in the form of audiotape recordings and about 590,000 pages of
transcriptions. About 80 percent are described in the office's book, The
Oral History Collection at Columbia University, 4th ed., by Charles L.
Smith, 1979, in which collections are alphabetically arranged, but there is no
separate index of individual names. All citations are accessible through
RLIN. Also about 1,200 transcripts have been published on microfiche. The
following list of names was compiled from The Oral History Collection at
Columbia University, and the name authority verified by an RLIN search.
These names provide access to some materials relating to aviation in the
following projects, which themselves are also described at greater length

Air Force Academy
Project. MS75-462.
Oral histories; l969- ; 5,000 pages of
transcript.
Transcripts of tape recorded interviews with significant
figures in military aviation. Major topics include strategies and tactics in
World War I and II, and Korea, the establishment of the AF Academy and
interservice relationships.
Alaskan Pioneers Project.
Oral
Histories; 1931-1952; 394 pages of transcripts.
Includes reminiscences of
pioneer settlers in Alaska. Among eight interviewees is Oscar Winchell (1903-
), a bush pilot in Alaska, describing airplanes, equipment, and landing
fields.
Arnold, Henry Harley, (1886-1950) Project. MS70-
481.
Oral histories; 1911-1950; 28 items; 1,726 pages of
transcript.
Life of Arnold, first Commander of the USAAF, as related by his
associates. Included are interviews with veteran Air Force officers
throughout the country and with retired RAF officers in Great Britain who
worked with Arnold during World War II. Primary emphasis is upon Arnold's
role in the Air Forces, his relations with his associates, the types of
problems he met, and his contributions to the development of military
aviation. The material deals with Arnold as a student at West Point, as an
infantry officer in the Philippines, as a student pilot under Orville Wright,
as a close associate of William Mitchell, as Chief of the Army Air Corps, and
Commanding General of the USAAF and Member of the Combined Chiefs of Staff
during World War II.
Aviation Project. MS70-482.
Oral
histories; 1903-1961; 113 items; 5,200 pages of transcript.
A broad survey
of the development of aviation, beginning with accounts by associates of the
Wright brothers and other pioneers in the US and abroad. Interviewees include
designers, engineers, pilots and executives, stunt flyers, and barnstormers.
Veterans of World War I describe the development of aerial warfare in that
conflict. Recollections trace the progress of aviation between the two World
Wars: commercial aviation, air mail development, record flights, technological
improvements, air races and polar flights, gliders, and lighter-than-air
craft. General William Mitchell's campaign for strengthening military
aviation and Charles Lindbergh's solo flight to Paris provide focal points for
many accounts of this period. Eyewitness stories of episodes in World War II
deal with exploits of the RAF, the Luftwaffe, and the USAAF; and range from
the Battle of Britain to Hiroshima. Research and production problems and
achievements are detailed from the outset to the jet era and the beginnings of
rockets and missiles. The material includes descriptions of the breaking of
the sound barrier, stories of test pilots for supersonic planes, and accounts
of aerial warfare in Korea.
Eisenhower Administration Project. MS70-
487.
Oral Histories; 1953-1961; ca. 35,600 pages of
transcripts.
Contributions from those who played major roles in the
Eisenhower Administration, as well as the recollections of observers and of
those knowledgeable about special aspects, including aviation matters.
Participants with a particular interest in aviation include Winthrop Williams
Aldrich (1885-1974), Evan Peter Aurand (1917- ), Robert Abercrombie Lovett (1895-
), Elwood Richard Quesada (1904-1993), Julius Earl Schaefer (1893-1978),
Dudley Crawford Sharp (1905-1987), and Edward J. Thye (1896-
1969).
Flying Tigers Project. MS70-489.
Oral histories; 1942-
1949; 583 pages of transcript.
At the Flying Tiger reunion at Ojai,
California, pilots, mechanics, radiomen, administrative, and ground crew
personnel reminisced of their experiences with Claire Chennault's American
Volunteer Group in Burma and China, and with the China National Aviation Corp,
during and after World War II. They detailed adventurous days in Rangoon,
Toungoo and Kunming, retreating over the Burma Road, Flying P-40's against
Japanese bombers and Zeros, and operating the Mukden shuttle before the fall
of Shanghai in 1949.
Marine Corps Project.
Oral histories; 1916-
; ca. 20,000 pages of transcripts.
These memoirs by retired Marines
include a picture of the development of Marine Corps aviation in the twentieth
century, with such participants as James Patrick Sinnott Devereux (1903- ),
Edward Colston Dyer (1907-1975), and Walter Greatsinger Farrell (1897-
).
Naval History Project.
Oral Histories; 1915- ; ca.
