PLANNING A VISIT TO THE NASM ARCHIVES
Researchers must make appointments for visits.
Please call for an appointment as far in advance of your planned visit
as possible as space is limited, and reading rooms may be temporarily
closed to accommodate Museum functions.
Photocopiers, microfilm reader/printers, and videoprinters
are available for a fee to researchers at both locations. Notebook computers
may be used in the reading rooms; the use of additional computer equipment,
such as scanners, is prohibited. The use of copy cameras is prohibited.
MAIN ARCHIVES READING ROOM
Research on most topics can be completed in the main NASM Archives Reading
Room. Researchers working here may also make use of the collections of
the NASM Branch of Smithsonian
Institution Libraries.
Location: National
Air and Space Museum, Room 3100 (west end of the 3rd floor of the
Museum), 7th & Independence Avenue SW, Washington, D.C.
Open: Tuesday through Friday, 10:00 a.m. to 4:30
p.m.; call 202-633-2320 for an appointment.
Closed: Saturday, Sunday and Monday, and all Federal
holidays.
GARBER FACILITY ARCHIVES READING ROOM
Researchers requiring access to certain collections may be directed to
the NASM Archives Reading Room at the Garber Facility. Please note that
this reading room is very small. If you are planning a visit, the sooner
you call for an appointment, the more likely you are to be able to get
an appointment on the day of your choice.
Location: Building 12, Paul
E. Garber Preservation, Restoration and Storage Facility, 3904 Old
Silver Hill Road, Suitland, Maryland.
Open: Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 4:00
p.m.; call 301-238-1655 for an appointment and be prepared to state
the specific NASM Archives collection which you would like to view.
Closed: Thursday mornings, Saturday and Sunday,
and all Federal holidays. The Garber Facility Reading Room is also closed
each day for lunch between noon and 1:00 p.m.; researchers will be asked
to leave the Reading Room during this period.
RESEARCH POLICY
The Archives' collections are generally open to anyone with a research
need. Access to some materials may be restricted by their donors. Fragile
materials may also be restricted to assure their preservation. Staff will
make every effort to inform researchers of known copyright restrictions.
