Comets do not streak across the sky like meteors, but move slowly over many days or weeks. On the left is a photo of Comet C/1975 N1 (Kobayashi-Berger-Milon) taken on August 9, 1975. The photo on the right was taken one night later, and shows that the comet has moved relative to the spiral galaxy Messier 106.

Comet 1P/Halley in 1835
Hand-drawn sketches can be as valuable as photographs when accompanied by the time and location of the observation. Changes in the shape of the coma from historical records have been used to establish the rotation period of comet nuclei.
These sketches [125k GIF -- 42k JPEG] from the 1835 return of Halley's Comet were made by F.W. Bessel, and show detail visible in the inner coma.
