Asteroids: Spacecraft Encounters
- Galileo (1989-present)
The Galileo spacecraft was designed to study Jupiter's atmosphere, satellites
and surrounding magnetosphere; it began its probe in December 1995.
Because it requires a Venus-Earth-Earth gravity assist, the spacecraft
was able to make useful scientific observations of these planets and
the Earth's moon and exercise the spacecraft's scientific capabilities.
Galileo also flew close to the asteroid belt providing close-up observations
of asteroids Gaspra and Ida. More on Galileo mission to
Jupiter.
- NEAR (1996-2001)
(note: NEAR products are not yet part of the RPIF collection)
The NEAR (Near Earth Asteroid Rendezvous) spacecraft launched in 1996
on a five year mission to rendezvous with and enter orbit around the
Near Earth asteroid Eros. The spacecraft achieved orbit on February
14, 2000 and its planned one-year orbit of Eros represents the first
long-term close-up study of an asteroid. Photographs and information
are available on the NEAR project home page at http://near.jhuapl.edu/ and at http://cps.earth.northwestern.edu/near.html.
